It’s that time of year again – Obon is just around the corner.
Are you beginning your holiday tonight?
For those of us working in banks, it’s business as usual. We keep going, without pause.
Working or relaxing, we all deserve a little appreciation.
Let’s make today a beautiful one.
さて、お盆とは、ご先祖様をお迎えする行事のことですね。
日本の夏の風物詩でもあり、仏教の教えに基づくものだそうです。
お釈迦様のお弟子様が、亡き母が地獄で苦しんでいるのをみて、お釈迦様に助けを求めたと。お弟子様は教えに従って、亡き母が生前犯した罪を供養したことで、母が救われたことが由来とのこと。
そして、その仏教の教えと日本古来の祖先の霊を祀る風習が合わさり、今のお盆の形になったようです。
As you may know, Obon is a time when we welcome the spirits of our ancestors back home.
A cherished symbol of summer in Japan, Obon is said to be grounded in the gentle wisdom of Buddhism.
Long ago, a devoted disciple of Buddha saw his mother tormented in the spirit world. Guided by Buddha’s wisdom, he offered food and prayers to monks, not just for her, but for all who suffer. His compassion reached her, and she was saved. This story is said to be the origin of Obon.
Over time, Buddhist beliefs blended with Japan’s native customs of honoring ancestral spirits, shaping the Obon we know today.
ご先祖様たちが帰ってきてくれるので、ナスやキュウリを使って精霊馬を作ってお迎えするのが一般的ですよね。迎え火・送り火を玄関先で焚いたりすることもあるそうです。
お休みでみんな集まる場合は、家族でお墓参りにいったりもしますよね。
自分たちのルーツであるご先祖様のことをよく考える時期。私たちが生きているのもご先祖様があればこそ。改めて、生きることへ背筋が伸びるような心持ち。
Since it’s believed that our ancestors return during Obon, it’s common to make spirit animals using eggplants and cucumbers to welcome them. Some families also light welcoming fires and farewell fires at their doorsteps.
If you’re spending Obon with loved ones, you might take the time to visit your family’s grave together.
Obon is time to reflect on our roots and honor the ancestors who made our lives possible. Their presence reminds us to stand tall and live with intenton.
以前読んだ本には「実際にお墓参りや神社やお寺にいけなかったとしても、心のなかで祈るだけで、その方々へ私たちの声は届いているんだよ。時々手を合わせて祈ってみてね。」とありました。
昨今は、仕事の関係で、実家から離れて暮らす方も多いのではないでしょうか。お仕事でお休みが取れない時は、手を合わせて祈るだけでも、ご先祖様たちに喜んでもらえそうですね。
A book I read once said, “Even if you can’t visit a grave, shrine, or temple, simply praying in your heart allows your voice to reach them. So from time to time, put your hands together and offer a quiet prayer.”
With work and busy schedules, it’s not always easy to return home. But even a quiet moment of prayer can reach your ancestors – and surely, it brings them joy and comfort.
また、身近なご先祖様といえば両親ですね。
私はまだまだ親孝行ができておらず、至らない自分自身に悔しくなることがあります。
声を聞くために電話をしたり、lineでメッセージをするだけでも喜んでくれる。
そんな優しい存在への感謝を忘れず、私自身も幸せになって、溢れた分を両親に渡せたらいいなと思う日々です。
両親だけでなく、大切な存在にも、たくさんの感謝を届けたくなりますね。
When I think of ancestors, my parents come to mind first.
I often feel frustrated with myself for not doing enough to show my gratitude.
But even a phone call or a simple message on LINE makes them happy.
I hope to live a life filled with joy – and share that overflow with them.
Not just my parents, but all the precious people in my life deserve my deepest thanks.
余談ですが、お盆と聞いて私が思い出すのは、漫画『聖☆おにいさん』（※）の一コマ。
As a side of note, whenever I hear the word “Obon”, I’m reminded of a scene from the manga “Saint Young Men”.
（（※）…皆さん、『聖☆おにいさん』は知っていますか？漫画家中村光先生の作品のひとつで、今も連載中のコメディ漫画です。仏教のブッダとキリスト教のイエスが友達関係で、バカンスを取るため地上に降り立ち、日本の立川でほのぼの暮らすというお話。仏教やキリスト教の逸話から生まれるユーモアたっぷりのエピソードの数々が最高な作品ですよね！共感してくださる方も多いはず。私は全エピソードが推しで、漫画も全巻集めています。これからも中村先生には元気で幸せでいてほしいですね。次回作も楽しみです。）
(The manga “Saint Young Men”. Have you heard of it? It’s a comedy series by Hikaru Nakamura, still ongoing today. Buddha and Jesus, portrayed as close friends, some down to Earth for vacations and live together in Tachikawa, Japan. The episodes are full of clever humor drawn from Buddhist and Cristian stories. I love every single chapter and own all the volumes. I truly hope Ms. Nakamura stays happy and healthy – and I’m excited for her future works.)
とあるエピソードで、お盆の話があるんです。
初めて迎える日本の夏に喜ぶイエスが、とんでもなく自由な精霊馬を作ってしまい、それに乗った幽霊さんが尋常じゃない速さであの世とこの世を行き来したという話。その発想はなかったなと、大笑いした記憶があります。
中村先生の漫画はユーモアが上手く織り交ぜられていて、読めば読むほど癖になるんですよね。
