私は朝から、彼と犬とまったり散歩を楽しみました。朝方に散歩をしていると、昨年の秋ごろに亡くなられた谷川俊太郎さんの「朝のリレー」の一節を思い出します。「この地球では、いつもどこかで朝がはじまっている／ぼくらは朝をリレーするのだ／経度から経度へと／そうしていわば交替で地球を守る」。この言葉のならびを読むと、何だか背が伸びたような気分になりませんか？私たちは、地球の住人なんだなって。面白い。
それでは、珈琲片手にほっと一息。今日も良い日にしましょうね。
It's finally Saturday—how are you all spending it? I hope your day is unfolding gently.
This morning, I enjoyed a slow walk with my partner and our dog. As we strolled through the quiet streets, I found myself recalling a line from Shuntaro Tanikawa’s poem Morning Relay, who sadly passed away last autumn:
“On this planet, morning is always beginning somewhere. We pass the morning baton, from longitude to longitude, and in doing so, we take turns guarding the Earth.”
Reading those words always makes me feel as if I’ve grown taller somehow—as though I’m reminded that I am, indeed, a resident of this Earth. Isn’t that a curious feeling?
So, let’s take a breath, sip our coffee, and make today a gentle one.
さて、今日は『苔』について書かせてください。
And now, if you don’t mind—I’d love to write a little about moss.
苔について🌿
みなさんは、苔に興味はありますか？
滝や、鬱蒼とした森のなか、岩肌や樹に広がる緑の絨毯。ふかふかしたその見た目の愛らしさもさることながら、近付いてみたときに見えるしっかりとした枝や葉、その小さな世界観がたまらない。水を垂らせば、水滴をその葉に抱き、まるで朝露に濡れる芝生のよう―。
Are you interested in moss?
In places like waterfalls and dense forests, moss spreads across rocks and tree trunks like a soft green carpet.
Its fluffy appearance is undeniably charming, but what truly captivates me is the intricate world revealed when you look closely—the tiny branches and leaves, each with its own quiet presence.
When you drop a bit of water onto it, the droplets nestle gently on its leaves, just like morning dew resting on a patch of grass.

と言っても、その魅力にみせられたのは最近のことなので、これからゆっくりと苔を楽しむ人生を送りたいと思っています。まずは苔とは何か、調べたことを書いていきますね。
Yes, I’ve recently found myself captivated by moss.
It’s a newfound fascination, so I’m hoping to spend my days slowly discovering and enjoying the quiet beauty it offers. To begin, I’d like to share what I’ve learned so far—starting with the question: What exactly is moss?
苔というのは、胞子で増える植物のことです。
根・茎・葉の区別があいまいで、水分は表面から吸収します。土や樹や岩についているイメージですが、苔は根をはらず、胞子によって這うように広がっていくようです。
乾燥に強く、日陰を好んで育ちます。水分がなくなると休眠し、再び占めると活動を再開する“復活力”を有しています。
日本には約1,700種以上が生育しているとのこと。かなりの種類があるのだと驚きました。
Moss is a type of plant that reproduces through spores.
It doesn’t have clearly defined roots, stems, or leaves, and instead absorbs moisture directly through its surface.
While we often imagine moss growing on soil, trees, or rocks, it doesn’t actually take root—it spreads by creeping outward, carried by its spores.
Moss thrives in shaded areas and is remarkably resilient to dryness. When water is scarce, it enters a dormant state, and once moisture returns, it quietly resumes its activity—this “revival power” is one of its most fascinating traits.
I was surprised to learn that over 1,700 species of moss grow in Japan alone. That’s quite a variety!
三大聖地🔥
そして、日本国内には、苔の三大聖地なるものがあるそうです。
It turns out that Japan is home to what are known as the “Three Great Moss Sanctuaries.”
◎奥入瀬渓流（青森県）：約30種類以上の苔が生息する東北随一の苔の楽園。苔むした岩や倒木が広がり、まるでジブリの世界のような幻想的な風景だそう。こだまがいるかもしれませんね。
◎ Oirase Gorge (Aomori Prefecture): Known as one of the finest moss sanctuaries in northeastern Japan, this gorge is home to over 30 species of moss. Moss-covered rocks and fallen trees stretch across the landscape, creating a scene so enchanting it feels like something out of a Studio Ghibli film. You might even imagine little forest spirits—kodama—hiding among the greenery.

◎北八ヶ岳・白駒の池（長野県）：標高2,100ｍ以上に広がる原生林と苔の絨毯。約485種類の苔が確認されており、苔の密度と種類の豊富さは国内トップクラス。森の静けさと苔の柔らかさを直に感じられる場所とのこと。

◎ Shiratani Unsuikyo, Yakushima (Kagoshima Prefecture): This moss-covered forest, shrouded in mist, is part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Known as the inspiration for the forest in Princess Mononoke, it carries a mystical atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. With its ideal humidity and temperature, the moss here thrives year-round, offering a lush green landscape in every season.

私は、憧れはあるものの、まだ行ったことはありません。ジブリの世界を体感できるなんて、言葉では言い表せないほどワクワクします。犬を連れていくのは難しそうなので、いつか行くときのために、これから体力づくりを頑張ろうと思います。

As for me, I’ve long admired them, but I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. The thought of stepping into a world that feels like a Ghibli film fills me with a kind of excitement that words can hardly express. It might be difficult to bring my dog along, so I’m hoping to build up my strength little by little—for the day I finally get to go.
そんな苔ですが、拝むにはやはり森にいく必要があったりして、なかなかハードルが高い…。
家で楽しめるインテリアとして苔玉なんかを探しては、ピンと来るものがなく、何だか物足りない日々を過ごしていました。
As much as I’m drawn to moss, it often feels like you need to venture deep into the forest to truly appreciate it—which can be a bit of a challenge.
I’ve been looking for moss-inspired interior pieces, like kokedama (moss balls), to enjoy at home, but nothing has quite resonated with me. Lately, I’ve found myself feeling a little unsatisfied, as if something is quietly missing from my days.
苔テラリウムとの出会い🌄
そんななか、先日、機会あって長野にいった際、とあるお店で運命的な出会いがありました。
『苔テラリウム』なるものに出会ってしまったんです。みなさん、ご存じですか？
Recently, while visiting Nagano, I had a chance encounter that felt almost fated.
I stumbled upon something called a moss terrarium. Have you heard of it?

テラリウムとは「ガラスやアクリルなどの透明で小さな容器で、植物や小動物を育てる方法や空間のこと」だそうです。苔テラリウムは、インテリアとして家における、まさに小さな“苔の世界“なんです。こういったものがあるとは知らず、お店でひとめぼれして、気に入ったものを購入し、自宅へ送ってもらいました。
A terrarium is said to be a small, transparent container—often made of glass or acrylic—used to grow plants or small animals. A moss terrarium, then, is a miniature world of moss that you can enjoy right at home as part of your interior decor. I hadn’t known such a thing existed, but when I saw one at a shop, it was love at first sight. I found one I truly liked and had it sent to my home.
苔テラリウムのお世話は簡単です。あまり手間はかかりません。
水は、数週間に1度あげます。小さな苔たちが水を含む姿が最高に可愛いんです。光は、部屋の電球や間接照明で育てられます。テラリウムの中にミニチュアのフィギュアを置くことも可能で、自分の想像した世界観を作り上げることもできます。とっても可愛い。本当に癒されます。
Taking care of a moss terrarium is surprisingly simple and doesn’t require much effort.
You only need to water it once every few weeks, and watching the tiny moss soak up the moisture is absolutely adorable. It can thrive under regular room lighting or soft ambient light. You can even place miniature figurines inside the terrarium to create your own imagined world. It’s incredibly charming—and truly soothing to have around.
